Cortizo Says No to Safe Third Country Idea

Panama will not serve as a ‘safe third country’ for U.S. asylum seekers.

Responding to pressure from the Trump administration to have Panama house migrants while in transit, President Laurentino Cortizo says it’s not a viable option and that “the migration issue is not a Panamanian issue.”

Panama receives a large and increasing flow of migrants from Asia, Africa and other countries on their way north through Colombia from South America.

Although the previous administration earmarked $9 million for the construction of a migrant shelter in the Darien, Cortizo would prefer to use that money to combat money laundering and drug trafficking.
