Panama’s attorney general Kenia Porcell says that she will resign because of the messages leaked between her and former President Juan Carlos Varela.
“The country is above the attorney general, and I have to think about Panama. My presence affects impartiality,” Porcell told Radio Panama on Tuesday, saying that her resignation will take effect January 1.
Although there is no formal investigation yet, the leaked messages, in what has come to be known as the Varelaleaks, are allegedly tied to the Odebrecht bribery scandals and other cases.
The Cabinet Council will have to find a replacement to complete Porcell’s 10-year term, which ends December 31, 2024.
